There have been quite a few questions on investigations regarding ample protection needed prior to, during and after encounters with the dead/demons/spirits.
I would like to offer up what little I know on the subject.
First and formost there are the basics that have overlapped many religions/beliefs/cultures arround the world such as sageing, holy water, prayers, talismans...
But what I want to touch upon are the ritual bases. In catholosism, blessed rose water/holy water is a all purpose staple for protection as is burning a mix of Frankincense/myrrh,(this used to be mixed with sea salt but was droped from the mix mid 1470's because of its representation of mother earth!). This incense was burned to purify and sanctify a holy space in preperation for a sacred sacrement/blessing to god. We pagans use these same incenses to bless our homes and altars as these are our "churches". In other words, any space can be made sacred as long as the need is there. This also can be done to create "safe zones" during difficult/dangerous investigations.
Secondly there is protection of the body in relation to the soul. Talismans have been used since the begining of humanity as a means to gard against evil. The earliest forms were those of "power animals" such as bisson, mamouths,wolves, bears... and were thought to also guard the wearer from being attacked by said beast. These days we wear crosses, depictions of saints, earth totems, penticles, stars of David....They carry the same spiritual weight as the power animals did for early man/woman. The thought behind this is that your faith, whichever you may choose, is tied to the holy symbol and thus works as a ward and godly/holy conduit against evil in its many forms both physical and spiritual. Meditation and prayer while grasping said tomes will only empower the item with your spiritualism. Whether you use tomes or stones(which I will later discuss) is personal prefference. I for one choose both.
Then there is the home and personal sacred spaces. For me there is a routine of daily sageing, ring of bells/wind chimes outside my window, prayer, offerings of incense and offerings to god or mmy ancestors. These are just the few things that I personal do daily or as I feel I need them. We all have our routines that keep us sane...lol...
When leaving an investigation or any place realy, We ask that the spirits of the place stay where they belong and adimantly state that they are not welcome to follow us home! Now this sould work 95% of the time as spirits were once human and most with goo/some manners. But there are manevolent beings out there who's soul cause is to feed moff us and make our lives misserable. There are ways to deal with these bad boogies but we can discuss that later.
When paying mind to these simple activities and developing your own routines, personal/spiritual protection should become routine for most of us. For others...practice make perfect!

Thanks for the info, Nym. THere have been quite a few questions about this in the forums lately. I for one, was very interested in what you guys did to protect yourselves before investigations. Along with the sage and the St. Michael prayer, I brought along talismans in the form of crosses with special meaning. I had a bracelet with cross shaped links and a cross pendant which belonged to my deceased mother-in-law who was a very spiritual woman but also a big believer in the paranormal. I also wore a cross pendant that belonged to my deceased grandmother who was always a protective influence on me. Wearing these items made me feel connected to spiritual protection and my ancestors, so to speak. I also had a candid conversation with god on my drive up to meet you guys and asked for protection for myself and all of us. I must have looked like a damn fool talking to myself driving up 95 but I didn't care! LOL
Whether those items had the desired protective effects that I wanted them to, I certainly FELT calm and safe which was probably the biggest piece. I believed that I was protected.
I'd love to hear more about stones. I've been drawn to them for years and have a few pieces that I've picked up along the way at fairs. I just love the way polished stones feel against my skin in a pendant etc. There's something very calming about a particular pendant that I have which is a beautiful piece of rose quartz mounted with a gold bezel and a small piece of amethyst. I wore it a lot in college but haven't since then. Off to look up properties of rose quartz! LOL I think the woman who sold it to me said it would bring me love or good luck.

As for the properties of various gem stones:
\Rose quartz: promotes a sence of hope and peace and amplifes the emotion of love. It is often carved into the shape of a heart as a tallisman. Rose quartz stones found in the natural shape of a heart are the strongest in energy.Sacred to Aphrodite/Venus
Gold: a very powerful metal. It is the soul metal of the element of fire/sun and is the most sacred of metals in christianity held even above platinum. Gold is sacred to the god Apolo as silver is to Dianna/Artemis. Crosses and penticles made of gold were designated for daily ritualistic use as silver is almost souly reserved for nocternal ceremonial use.
Amethist: this purple stone is sacred among the worlds religions for its healing properties. The color purple is also associated with magic. As used in protection amulets it represents the devine spiritual energy that resides in us all. It is more often used by weman. The deeper the color, the stronger the stone. When worn on a daily baisis the stone may eventualy fade to clear if physical illness is present. When the stone becomes almost clear it shoud be removed from possesion and buried in the ground never to be worn again. Sacred to Circy/Hecate/Dionysus.

Protective Gemstones:
Quartz: pure clear quartz spears/points are the most powerful stones you can wear while dealing with boogies of any kind. They both emminate and absort energy and can easily be recharged for future use like a personal battery. However, once a quartz begins to darken it should be burried until the earth has had a chance to cleanse it.
Hemetite: A naturaly occuring magnetic stone: imbues its possesor with earth energy wich can help upn your protective energy field.
Silver: elemental metal of earth/moon. Protects against most spiritual attack as well as attacts from Lychins/wearewolves and vampires. Silver talismans are the most powerful. Raw silver is unwearable as is often contains lead and argon and aresenic.
Gold may be worn in its naturaly pure for as it does not contain poisonous materials and is a steril metal.

Other protective stones and thier properties:
Laradorite:: repairs, cleanses and strengthens the aura.
Fluorite::opens the gates of psychic reception
Load stone::wore as earrings or near the ear is said to produce clearaudience(clearvoiant hearing)
Onyx::Talismans carved out of onyx or silver ones fixed to onyx are said to offer the greatest protecion from the dead.
Tigereye::protects wearer from the evil eye. When worn on the head it promotes clearvoiency.
Moon stone::protects the wearer(especialy weman)against possession.and grants extra energy to the wearer during the full moon.
Diamond::the strongest procective love stone is that of an heirloom diamond wore by a woman who had life long love and a happy life.
Safire::blue:protects from deamons but opens the mins eye to other worldly presences.
Desert rose/gympsum::placed in four cornerns of the home protects from home possession/haunting.
