oh wow thank you for the rest of the information! It is amazing they even caught him with the little forensics they had back then. and all.
I will have to look for him in like old archives of the Thomaston Prison, they may have his name! :) Maybe he haunts someplace in there too! interesting stuff. Who knows this could be on your land!! Who knows you could be the owner of the old Knight Farm! lol :)
And not even know it! :)
Keep us posted :)
unfortunatly i dont live at the farm we built my house only 12 years ago lol.. i have a feeling we actually own what was once the field with the knife seems promising
Very promising. Well if you can ask or if you are freindly with the town and the neighbors around you they all may know exactly where the house IS or WAS and allow you there on the land to look it over. Be really careful of that well though, we don't want you to post you were caught up in there for days on end! or broke something falling into the thing! UGH! I found something on the Knight Trial, in the Syracuse Daily but they want you to pay for a subscription to look at it, and I could not find anything for free to look at! bummer! indeed! It took place or the article did on February 28th, 1857 so if anyone can find a FREE link showing the article it would be great to read. I did not find anything on the Thomaston Prison and him being housed in the old prison a lot of it was about how they ripped the old prison down, which is a shame they were once giving tours in the old prison would of liked to seen that history indeed! I swear Maine is really famous for ripping history down around here! Makes me so mad! But oh well it is gone now. I am sure though if you can get a map at the town office or even the library maybe of the land, it would show you the exact details of the Knight Farm. Would be interesting to see if it is right near your backyard or not! :) And maybe you will be able to find out the new owner and be allowed in the area to investigate it further! Keep us posted please if you get any pictures or anything let us know or even some EVP's love to hear! :) thanks
apparently there is a lot of history in this section of Poland.....Have you had any activity in your house? I wouldnt be surprised if you did!!!!! Lisa B.
the path is actually kind of a public trail as long as you stay close to on the trail behind my house no one really cares.. and yes i have actually had some stuff in my house..my dog likes to look upstairs in the loft and bark and our spare bedroom always feels like there is someone in there looking out over the land because that side is about 30-40 feet in the air. but i think he might actually be the man from mass. who crashed his vehicle and died right at the bottom of my driveway a few years ago. oh yeah about the prison i had found a site that shows that there are 4 prison records for the state of maine 3 in 1857 which he was actually in portland, auburn, then thomaston.. and the 4th one was in 1905.. i couldnt open them though they were a paysite.. i believe he must have died in 1905 or maybe been released.
wow you have an exciting home and land there Buick. do you have the link to the sites on the prison? i would love to read more on that of what I can get. Interesting, on your home and what you found on the Prison. So originally the prison was set in Portalnd, Maine then moved to Thomaston, maine where it has been since.
If i am reading it right :)
I hate those pay for sites.. you shouldn't have to pay for history!
oh well! I would try to get a town map if you can and see who owns the property around you I bet you could find more on the farm and the house where now you have an idea of where it may be..anyways. :) Good luck and keep us all posted!
Love to see some pictures of your home, and if you catch anything in the rooms you speak of. Dogs are very sensitive, I know my boxer is very sensitive to the spirits and our pitbull too! :)
i believe the prison has always been there lol george knight was originally sent to portland. yeah i hate paysites too.. my dog velcro acts wierd all the time lol i'll keep you posted
do keep us posted Buick we will be waiting for your results :)
I just did a google search into who George Knight was and it pulled up this sight. The reason I searched is because my fiance and I just purchased a home in Buckfield in which we found a complete series of newspapers from the 1850's following the murder trial of George Knight of Poland. All in order and in great legible condition. Amazing, huh?
Now I see that supposedly his wife, the victim, haunts Poland? I was amazed by the find tucked away in the barn, but now I am even more fascinated. These newspapers are a definite must-read then. I hadn't read them yet, as I hadn't gotten around to getting some latex gloves to handle them. I don't want the oils from my fingers to deteriorate them.
How interesting!

This is a url to the testimony of George Knight during his trial, in which I found in the harvard law archives.
It is 64 pages I believe and you can save it in PDF form to your computer which made it easier for me to read.
Hi HAL,
Amazing finding those newspapers. You are so lucky to have such a complete set. Do you have info on the history of your home? It makes me wonder if the previous homeowners were related to either the victim or the accused...
Can't wait to hear the rest of this story. Awesome post.

Hey HAL welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!! Buicknut40 hasn't been on the forum for a while, but I emailed him to let him know of your find about George Knight. I think that is amazing about the newspaper, and I too would be interested to know why they had kept that particular story line. I am glad that you are taking precautions to preserve them too, they are an important piece of history. It is exciting to find old treasures in a house. A friend of mine was putting new siding on her house, and in the wall found the cardboard holder for a pair of Roy Rogers (I think it was) boys suspenders from the 1950's......lol..........Lisa B.
Hal I loved what I read on the Trials and the old language they used was just amazing I liked it alot how they all talked back then. But it was all interesting. I hope you keep in touch with us and let us know more about any more finds or if you even have any activity in the home.. let us know more and Lisa interesting isn't it what is in old homes! You never know what you may find!
Thanks for the replies. Yah, I read the testimonies and found them really interesting also. I was so engulfed in the reading that my finace' chris walked by and spoke to me and I jumped and was so startled that I actually fell out of my chair! LOL! I found the whole thing so insane, it left me with so many questions, I mean it was obvious that Mr. Knight did it, but what was his mothers involvement (I seem to beiieve she either knew what was going to happen or was an active participant) and why was Mary Knight yelling "Hannah, let me alone!" while she was being attacked? SO many questions.....
As to the history of my home, I know a bit but am trying to find more. It is deeded to have been built in 1900 however we have found photos of the home (atleast we believe it to be the home) dating back to 1870, which is well after the murder, so the papers had to have been collected before the home was built. We are pretty sure that the home has (until us) always been in the "Thurlow" family. As to whether they are connected to the Knights somehow, I am currently trying to find out. We purchased the home as an estate sale as the previous owner, whom had lived here for 92 years, and her parents before that, passed away. I wish I had been able to talk to the woman, I am sure she would have some info.
It's also interesting that I found this site because since we moved in last August, I have always felt a presence in our home. A friendly one, but a presence of sort. I believe it is the old ladies father. He was a craftsman and mason and did extraordinary work on and around the house, and his tools are still in the barn, along with us finding intricate wooden jewelry boxes and other crafts around the house from the early 20th century. Alot of the really cool stuff was taken from the home by family before we moved in but we have found things tucked away that they missed and it is like a big treasure hunt! And I sometimes feel like Clinton is helping me find things at times. It's really neat.
Sorry, I am so long-winded! I will keep everyone posted on any info I find and on the contents of the papers when I read them. Thanks!
That will be great we look forward to hearing more of what you find out! Wow I bet it is a treasure hunt in that home! And the history in it! And the oddity that you have stuff from the 1870's but the home is dated built in the 1900's era! Wow all sorts of mystery there! This is really neat stuff! I bet that lady would of had a lot of history too! in rememberance of the years! too bad though she is not around to speak with anymore. Do keep us posted Hal it is a very interesting indeed!
Wow! This is facinating! I'm constantly amazed by what folks can find on the internet these days! Very interesting bit of history there too!
I feel like a horrible person for not being on the site in forever been kinda busy and not on the internet much... thanks for sharing the amazing find and keeping the story going with out me : )
Well welcome back Buick we missed you! Everyone gets busy and we are glad you are here and getting updated! Awesome to see you again!
I never mentioned that i have a phone number to a woman that supposedly has done tons of research on the story... I am just to chicken to call her lol if you want i could find her number if you wanted to call her.
